Members of Rugby’s St. Therese Little Flower Parish and community residents gathered to enjoy a meatball supper and bid on an assortment of items for a good cause at the Rugby Eagles club Jan. 29.
“This is the Little Flower School Annual Dine and Bid fundraiser,” said organizer Casandra Zwingel. “I think we’re at more than 20 years of doing this.”
“We’ve had to change things around a little bit this year because of COVID but it’s coming together,” she added as she turned to watch a small crowd of diners taking seats at tables in the Eagles dining room. “We’re normally holding this (event) in the fall. Now, we’ve pushed it back to January.”
Gov. Doug Burgum issued an order in November placing severe restrictions on dining and public gatherings. Restrictions eased beginning Dec. 13.
A steady stream of parishioners and members of the public attended the event, either sitting down to eat or picking up meals in Styrofoam containers and purchasing tickets for a silent auction. On the menu were meatballs, mashed potatoes and gravy, coleslaw in an oil and vinegar dressing, corn and assorted desserts.
“We have takeout and to go meals,” Zwingel said. “Now that (the state of North Dakota) is at the green level for COVID, we’ve been allowed to open up some dine in seating.”
Zwingel said diners paid $10 for each meal. “Raffle tickets range in price. The more money you spend, the cheaper the ticket is,” she said. “They start at $20 for 10 tickets.” All proceeds from sales of meals and auction tickets would be used to support Little Flower School, according to Zwingel.
Describing the auction, she said, “People drop (tickets) into the bags near the items. At the end of the night, we’ll draw out a winner (for each item) and get in touch with them.”
Items up for bid ranged from toys and games to certificates for hotel weekends and bulk packages of meat. Zwingel said businesses from the Rugby area and beyond donated the items for the event. Items were displayed for auction in the Eagles dining room. Items were also made available for bids online.
“We have over 100 donations,” Zwingel noted. “We did a small online auction in November. We had about 35 items there and today, we’re at about 115 items from local businesses, school families and really, the whole state,” she added. “Minot, Fargo, Devils Lake, Grand Forks have donated hotel weekends, trips to water parks and trampoline jump houses.”
“We try to be very mindful of kids, Christmas presents, birthday presents, things for young, old, everyone, really,” Zwingel added, describing the items going to lucky bidders. “We have a bouquet of flowers; we have food and a lot of gift cards so people can sit down and eat and support our local restaurants. We have handmade dish towels.”
“Also, an online Facebook auction is happening,” Zwingel said. “It’s called LFS Auction group,” she added. “It’ll end at 10 o’clock tonight.”
“We decided to think outside of the box,” Zwingel said of the fundraiser. “We’ll have to see what works and what doesn’t work, but I think this turned out well.”
“We’re pleased with how it’s going,” she added.
