Police chase ends in Alabama State Rep. Louise Alexander’s Bessemer flower shop - AL.com

flower.indah.link

Alabama State Rep. Louise Alexander had some terrifying moments this weekend when a police chase ended up inside her Bessemer business with her trapped inside.

Alexander, who has served District 56 since 2014 and whose daughter Kim is a Bessemer city councilwoman, had celebrated her grandson’s 22nd birthday with a family dinner at Perry’s Steakhouse on U.S. 280. Toward the end of the dinner, Alexander left to go to her business, Alexander Unity Flowers and Gifts on Ninth Avenue in Bessemer, to prepare a casket spray she was donating for a funeral on Saturday morning.

She parked her vehicle in front of the shop’s door and went inside to prepare the arrangement. At one point she had her cell phone in her hand and walked toward the front of the store to retrieve her other cell phone and happened to look out the window. “All I could see coming across the bridge down Ninth Avenue was two Bessemer police cars flying,’' Alexander said. She heard tires screeching and then it was chaos.

“Before I could get all the way to the back of the shop, Bessemer had come up in the shop,’' she said. The police vehicles struck her vehicle, knocking it and one of the police SUVs through the exterior wall of her shop and to the inside.

Alexander said a pedestal inside her business struck her in the back and propelled her toward the cooler. She used her hands to brace herself on the wall of the cooler door.

Not knowing what was going on, Alexander crawled to the back of the store and hid. “I didn’t know what was going on,’' she said. “I didn’t know if they got the person or if this person had a gun and was in here hiding.”

She called her brother who rushed to the store. It was only then, she said, that police were made aware that someone was inside the store. She said she was trapped inside for about 45 minutes until an officer came in and found her. The officers involved in the wreck had already been taken away from the scene, presumably to police headquarters to be questioned about the incident, she said.

“My brother said, ‘She’s in there. She’s trapped and can’t get out,’’' Alexander said.

“It was so scary,’' she said. “My brother said, ‘I have never heard you call for help like that.’”

Bessemer police Lt. Christian Clemons said the incident happened about 11 p.m. when officers tried to stop a vehicle in the area of 16th Street and Dartmouth Avenue for a stolen tag. The vehicle, a dark blue/black Dodge Charger with stolen Georgia tag RXP9551, did not stop for police lights and siren. The vehicle continued to flee, even turning off its lights to not be detected. The vehicle headed to the interstate and was not caught.

In response to the car fleeing, he said, two officers wrecked into each other and also caused damage to a parked car and Alexander’s building.

Some have criticized the chase on the social media. “It is important to realize the dangers associated with crimes that seem to be small on the surface,’' Clemons said. “Police know, by nature of our jobs, that stolen tags are there to hide other illegal activity. Stolen tags are commonly attached to stolen vehicles and stolen vehicles are attached to a wide variety of other crimes from thefts, burglaries, robberies, shootings and more.”

Alexander was taken to the hospital as a precaution. She said she has pain in her back, arms and legs but nothing is broken. She was released about 4 a.m. Saturday and will follow up with her doctor on Monday. She’s been resting at home but still in a lot of pain.

“I’m just glad to have my life,’' she said.

Clemons said no arrests have been made. Anyone with information on the stolen Georgia tag, the dark blue/black Dodge Charger and/or its occupants is asked to call Bessemer Police Department at 205-425-2411 or the anonymous tip line at 205-428-3541.

Lego releases flowers and a bonsai tree to be "beautiful pieces of decor" - Dezeen

flower.indah.link

Toy brand Lego has released construction kits that allow grown-ups to build flower bouquets and bonsai trees from bioplastic components.

The Danish brand's Botanical Collection consists of two sets, both featuring snap-together components derived from sugarcane.

Flower Bouquet contains elements to construct bunches of model flowers and grasses while the pieces in the Bonsai Tree set combine to create a miniature tree with optional blossom.

Kits to build individual roses and tulips are also available.

"As adults look for new ways to switch off and relax, we saw an opportunity to help them switch off after a busy day and relax as they immerse themselves in creating these beautiful botanical builds," said Lego senior designer Anderson Ward Grubb told Dezeen.

Lego's Botanical Collection is aimed at adults

Lego launched the collections as many people are spending extended periods of time at home due to the coronavirus pandemic. The completed models are intended to be displayed in the home.

"Our homes have always been the most important spaces in our lives, and that's only become even more so as many of us find ourselves there for longer periods of time than we're used to," explained Grubb.

"So, it was critical for us during the design process to create products that were not just fun to build but were beautiful pieces of decor that you'd want to have on display and bring you a bit of that focus and joy you felt as you put them together."

Lego Flower Bouquet
Lego flowers can be displayed instead of real blooms

Designed to allow users to create varied arrangements, the Flower Bouquet set contains 756 pieces that can be used to build flowers including roses, poppies, snapdragons, asters and daisies, along with several different types of grass.

The bonsai model building kit contains 878 pieces to create a tree that is displayed on a rectangular plant pot on a slatted wood-effect stand.

Both sets were designed to be customisable so that users can build there own individual creations.

The bonsai tree can be built with green leaves or pink cherry blossoms, while the flower bouquet has adjustable stems and pieces in new colours and shapes.

"We wanted to be sure people could make these pieces their own, so we made the flowers adjustable so they would work in different arrangements, and the Lego Bonsai tree can be customised to be in a normal green or blossoming pink," said Grubb.

"There is so much joy to be had in arranging your own bouquet, whether it's adjusting the positions of petals and leaves, adjusting the lengths of the stems, or seeing how each combination of flowers sits together until you've got it just the way you want it."

The bonsai tree can be assembled in blossom mode or leafy mode

All the sets contain pieces made from plant-based plastic sourced from sugarcane, which Lego launched in 2018 in a bid to reduce its plastic waste.

Currently, bioplastic bricks only account for a small amount of Lego's output, but the company's aim is to produce all of its bricks from bioplastic by 2030.

Grubb hopes that the Botanical Collection will bring families together and introduce Lego to new audiences.

"Over the past year, we've seen more families building together to help them get through lockdown, and many adults have also started building with Lego bricks for the first time," explained Grubb.

"Lego building can provide new ways for adults to explore their passions as they engage in a mindful activity," he continued. "We want to provide sets that adults with a wide range of different interests want to build before displaying proudly in their homes."

Lego roses can be assembled without risk from thorns

Plastic bonsai trees are not new to the design world. Last year Japanese design studio Nendo created a 3D-printed bonsai tree called Grid-Bonsai that owners can prune to their liking.

Martin Scorsese says pandemic benefitted Killers of the Flower Moon - messenger-inquirer

flower.indah.link

Martin Scorsese has admitted the pandemic actually benefitted 'Killers of the Flower Moon'.

The iconic big screen director's upcoming epic Western has been subject to delays thanks to the global health crisis, with the shoot postponed by a year after its original March 2020 start date proved impossible.

Speaking to Empire magazine, he said: "I feel as we're playing with it now, it's had a layer in, along with the actual main characters, of that sense that everybody is on [the collusion].

"Even the kindly old shopkeepers and that sort of thing. They're in on it just by being there.

"In any event, it's given us time to read more, and do more with costumes, locations, the structure of the buildings, houses, types of rooms."

By the end of 2020, the 78-year-old filmmaker was instead using the extra time to continue working on casting and fine tuning the script, with a "crew out in Oklahoma scouting the locations".

More from this section

He explained: "We're casting, we're working on the script. There's a crew out in Oklahoma scouting the locations and getting the production schedule worked out.

"Because we hope to go to Oklahoma sometimes in January and we aim to start shooting 5 April. And then through April, May, June, July, because I need a change in weather."

And Scorsese previously confessed that the global health crisis has taken its toll on his creativity as he works on his latest project.

He explained said: "This COVID, this pandemic, has stopped a creative process.

"I turned in on myself. Particularly the first couple of months, when we were locked in our houses, it eliminated a lot of distraction."

Artist Preserves Dozens of Flowers in an Incredible Frozen Installation - My Modern Met

Frozen Flowers Installation by Makoto Azuma

Florist and botanical sculptor Makoto Azuma pushes the boundaries of flower arrangement with his surrealist installation art. He explores themes like the ephemerality of nature by preserving bouquets in blocks of ice, submerging Bonzai trees in tanks of water, and even launching plants into space.

One of his more recent creations, entitled Frozen Flowers, required the artist to travel to the Notsuke peninsula in Hokkaido in the dead of winter. There, he constructed a tall tower of open flowers and doused it with water so that it would freeze over. The layers of ice preserved the viridity of the numerous blooms, even as the icicles descended from the stems, leaves, and petals. This hulking form shows the visual power of flowers; the bright blooms still managed to shine through the dense icicles.

Additionally, the size of the arrangement made it the sole focus among the flat, desolate landscape—again, highlighting the visual impact nature can have. “The place where this installation was held in Hokkaido is also called the end of the world since blighted pine trees are usually spread out there and that place freezes over in winter,” the artist's studio explains. “It was the series of how Azuma pursued unknown possibilities of flowers and how flowers express themselves under this condition.”

You can watch a video of Azuma's process via his website. Scroll down to see more images of this amazing piece, and follow the artist on Instagram to keep up-to-date with his latest projects.

If you're looking for a last-minute centerpiece for the table, an option like the Pink Ruffles would look lovely, or you can also order a Peachy Keen Bundle to bring to a gathering as a hostess gift. Of course, because the company is working on such short notice, certain flower type selections may be swapped out based on availability; but the end result is sure to be stunning given the brand's stellar reputation.

For those with classic tastes, you can't go wrong ordering from 1-800-Flowers. This flower delivery service offers same-day delivery on a wide selection of classic arrangements, like the Lovely Lavender Medley, which is made up of white roses and carnations, lavender Peruvian lilies, baby's breath and more, or this vibrant Warm Sunset Bouquet with sunflowers. The flower bouquets are sure to be a talking point at your holiday gathering, or any other occasion.

UrbanStems delivers all around the country, and products run the gamut from lush bouquets like The Bold -- which includes fresh flowers like roses, ranunculus, stock and scabiosa  -- to modern dried floral arrangements like The Icon. The company also offers delivery on a selection of plants, so you can send The Cathy, a low-maintenance xerographic air plant, as a gift to your favorite green thumb instead of a bouquet.

FTD Flowers

Looking specifically for a seasonal centerpiece? FTD Flowers has you covered. This delivery service has an impressive selection of traditional flower bouquet options, and it also offers a number of unique centerpieces with seasonal blooms that would make for beautiful flower arrangements for your holiday tablescape.

FTD Flowers chiefly advertises centerpieces but it has several stunning designs fit for a Valentine like the Blush Crush Bouquet. You can opt for same- or next-day delivery on many of its products, but it's always better to place your order in advance if you need the flowers for a major holiday (as opposed to a personal occasion).

Farmgirl Flowers

Have you ever found yourself scrolling through Pinterest, looking at beautiful floral tablescapes? While it might seem too challenging to put together a tablescape on your own, a fresh flower delivery from Farmgirl flowers makes it possible. This popular San Francisco-based flower company is known for its ethically grown flowers and burlap-wrapped bouquets. Farmgirl has a large selection of Valentine's Day bouquets for all you lovers out there.

In between big entertaining events, you can still order large lots of flowers, like The Market Haul, which includes 35 stems of fresh and seasonal flowers (three to four varieties in the mix) plus bits of greens so you can make your own arrangements. You'll also find lots of interesting Valentine's Day arrangements like this dark and mysterious Mini Valentine or VBFF with three colors of roses and a box of goodies.

Harry & David

Harry & David may be known for its gift baskets, but you can also find a beautiful selection of flowers and floral accessories from this retailer. It works with smaller farms, such as Creekside Farms in California and Teufel Holly Farms in Oregon, to deliver both fresh and dried flower arrangements and wreaths straight to your door.

In addition to traditional evergreen and boxwood wreaths for the holiday season, Harry & David offers other unique designs using eucalyptus, yarrow, reindeer moss, faux roses and more. This flowering gardenia bonsai would make an excellent Valentine's Day gift for someone who prefers plants over flowers.

Bloomsy Box

What do you get the person who has it all? How about a monthly delivery of fresh flowers or fresh flower arrangements? Flower subscription services are becoming increasingly popular, as they let you give month after month of beautiful bouquets. Bloomsy Box would make a wonderful gift for anyone on your list, as it delivers hand-tied bouquets from sustainable farms on a weekly, biweekly or monthly basis.

You can choose between original, deluxe and premium bouquets for your recipient -- the more expensive plans get you more flowers per delivery -- which makes the delivery fee feel lower. The selected items will vary each month and often include favorite items like roses, orchids and sunflowers. It's a gift that keeps on giving, and it's sure to put a smile on anyone's face.

Enjoy Flowers

If you're crafty, you might enjoy creating "do-it-yourself" bouquets, like those offered by Enjoy Flowers. The DIY Collection is actually a subscription service, so you'll get a new array of flowers delivered on a regular basis. You can choose from three sizes -- 20, 30 or 40 stems -- as well as between biweekly or monthly deliveries. The flowers will all be complementary, but it will be up to you to put them together into a cohesive arrangement to create your own gorgeous bouquet. Are you up for the challenge?

The DIY option would make a great gift for your favorite creative spirit, but it might also be beneficial if you want to create a cohesive floral display during the holidays. Alternatively, Enjoy Flowers offers both signature and farm-fresh subscription services that provide a hand-tied beautiful bouquet on a regular basis.

Venus Et Fleur

Do these boxes of roses look familiar? That might be because they're always popping up on celebrity social media accounts, including those of the Kardashians. This Le Mini Heart Bundle Set was engineered with Valentine's Day in mind and is very ready for its Instagram closeup.

If you want plenty of wow factor and something truly unique, this may be the floral design pick for you. Small boxes with a single rose start at $39, while more lavish displays can cost upward of $1,000. You can also choose from a variety of containers and rose colors, including bold metallic and rainbow varieties.

Floom

It's always nice to support local businesses, and Floom uses a network of independent florists in major cities around the country to fulfill its orders. You can order Floom flowers in NYC, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles and San Diego, and a talented local florist will put together your arrangement.

Your arrangement options will depend on where you're located. Floom also has same-day delivery options if you're putting together an event last-minute and can't get to the flower shop.

WNY woman opens Lakewood flower shop on journey to understand herself - WIVB.com - News 4

LAKEWOOD, N.Y. (WIVB)– A Jamestown area woman is following her passion by opening a new flower shop. And she says it all started with understanding herself.

Kimberly Carlson says the journey began when she lost her son to a drug overdose in 2016.

She says she needed to take a step back and reassemble herself.

She did just that by founding the flower shop called “Pea Pod & Juniper” in Lakewood, N.Y.

“I really was at a point that I needed to take things back to a basic idea of what I wanted my life to look like.”

Kimberly Carlson, Owner, Pea Pod & Juniper

But for Kimberly, it’s more than just a flower shop. She wants it to be a place for community members to unwind.

Kimberly says she drew inspiration for the name from her grand daughters.

Tap water is generally OK to use, but soft water, which has higher amounts of sodium, is not good for the flowers. Distilled water also works. Add a packet of commercial flower preservative and a small amount of bleach — no more than ¼ teaspoon per quart — to help keep the water clean and bacteria from building up. The flowers can be damaged if too much bleach is added.
