Residents in The Woodlands will be treated to some flower “graffiti” this week after a local floral design team planted three temporary flower art installations across the township.
Taylor Handfelt, owner of Piney Rose Flowers & Decor in The Woodlands, said the art exhibits in the Village of Panther Creek, Hughes Landing and Town Green Park are part of the Feb. 10 return of Artfeel, an artistic “night of whimsy” hosted by The Woodlands Arts Council at Market Street. The Artfeel events have been on hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“It is a fun opportunity to spread joy and positivity. It is almost like graffiti, but with flowers,” Handfelt said of the displays. “It is only up for a very short amount of time because flowers die fast.”
Handfelt said the art form is based off the pioneering work of New York City artist Lewis Miller, who in 2016 began the trend of pop-up flower art often referred to as “flower flash.”
On his website, Miller explains the basis behind the project, saying, “Our goal is to create a positive, emotional response through flowers. Seeing people’s reactions to our Flower Flashes emphasizes the basic goodness in all people and prioritizes compassion.”
Handfelt led three teams of flower artists in installing the three separate exhibits Tuesday morning. The flowers are located near the “Dreamer’ statue located in the median on The Woodlands Parkway at the traffic signal at West Panter Creek Drive; at The Woodlands Wind-O art bench in Hughes Landing; and the ‘You are Loved’ art bench, at the lower end of Town Green Park near the turning basin on The Woodlands Waterway.

The three installations set up on Tuesday are only the beginning, Handfelt noted, saying plans are in the works for “something much bigger in the future.” Other flower art may be placed at various art benches around the township which are installed by The Woodlands Arts Council.
There will also be flower art installed within the boundaries of Market Street The Woodlands, the massive outdoor shopping venue where Artfeel is hosted, Handfelt added.
“We really care a lot about our community, and we are always thinking of ways we can give back. With these installations, we hope we can bring positivity and show our community that we love them and are grateful for their support of Piney Rose,” Handfelt said in a press release about the event.
Art efforts aim to unite
The surge in public art projects is part of a wider effort from artists in The Woodlands to unite the community and lift spirits amid the uncertain times, said Jenny Carattini-Wright, executive director of The Woodlands Arts Council in a December interview.
Carattini-Wright also said officials are already planning for the 2021 The Waterway Arts Festival and they want the public to attend the first in-person Artfeel slated for Feb. 10.
“We are scheduled to host our next live show at 7 p.m. Feb. 10, back on the outdoor Market Street stage with social distancing in place. In the spotlight will be one of The Woodlands Art Council’s new art benches, ‘You Are Loved,’” Carattini-Wright explained in December.
Nickole Kerner Bobley, a local arts guru who helps coordinate community efforts and used to write an Artfeel column said the Feb. 10 Artfeel live show is in the planning stages with an exciting line-up of contributors. The premise of Artfeel events is to allow the public to express how they feel about works of art via dancing, spoken word or other methods of communication.
“We have a fun line-up of performers and we’ll do our best to try this masked, socially distanced ‘love fest’ if the virus numbers and weather behave,” Kerner Bobley said.
The Feb. 10 Artfeel is set for 7 p.m. in the Central Park outdoor event space in Market Street. The shopping venue and Artfeel organizers are asking attendees to follow CDC safety protocols, wearing faces masks or coverings, social distancing, washing hands as needed and also to limit interactions with people not living in a person’s immediate household.
