GATES MILLS, Ohio -- The Gates Mills Garden Club will conduct its biannual flower show July 16-17 with the theme “Shakespeare With a Twist.” In addition to sparkling plants, visitors can get a look at the club’s rich history in this, its 90th anniversary year.
The show, which will specialize in horticulture, will include a broad range of common and unique plant material displayed for judging. Cuttings and flowers from annuals, perennials, shrubs and trees will be featured.
In addition, expertly arranged potted plants will be displayed, along with fruits, vegetables and herbs grown by club members.
Several unique displays featuring Shakespeare quotes or themes will be available for viewing, including miniature hanging fairy gardens, topiary, pressed and dried flowers, and preserved seed pods, cones and nuts. There will also be an exhibit on fragrances in roses.
The pandemic resulted last year in a mini-show being held by one of the oldest and most popular area garden clubs. The 2021 show resumes the club’s biannual schedule that dates to its first show, held Sept. 3, 1931, at the village’s town hall.
“We’re going to have an education exhibit that will include pamphlets, photos and booklets from our past shows and the minutes from every meeting,” said club co-president Mary Schmidt, of Gates Mills.
That’s minutes from 10 months of meetings per year, for 90 years.
“Some of our members are doing the research now for the exhibit and found some of the things the club did in war times, like planting Victory Gardens,” Schmidt said.
Club membership today stands at a healthy 110, with many members living in Gates Mills. The club’s two most longstanding members are Tillie Malm and Sally Burke, who joined in 1960.
In 2011, the the club was the beneficiary of a cottage and barn built in 1834. The home, known as Esquire’s Cottage, is the oldest home on its original foundation in the village. The barn is known as the Tuckerman Barn.
The property, at 1280 Chagrin River Road, was once the home of former club president Florence Stage (1953-54) and her husband, John Tuckerman. The club restored the buildings, created gardens and transformed the barn into its current meeting venue. The property is now the club’s headquarters.
Over the years, the club’s numerous civic projects have garnered national recognition for the Gates Mills Arboretum and in areas including bird protection, historic preservation (of Esquire’s Cottage), Blue Star Memorial Marker landscaping, youth outreach, senior outreach and landscaping with wildflowers and native plants.
The Garden Club of Ohio named the Gates Mills Garden Club its “Garden Club of the Year for 2012.” The club also sponsors scholarships to uphold its mission. Its flower shows have won regular state, regional and national awards.
This year’s show, chaired by member Agnes Lane, will include a photography display of natural elements and a children’s educational display on “Floating Wetland Gardens.” Floating wetlands are container gardens of varying sizes that float on the surface of water.
These wetlands are good for the environment, because their roots grow beneath the water and absorb excess nutrients from fertilizer runoff, animal wastes and other sources. In addition, the water below the wetlands is cool and shady, providing habitat for fish and other organisms.
The Gates Mills Garden Club’s “Shakespeare With a Twist” Flower Show will be held from 1 to 5 p.m. July 16 and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 17 at the Esquire’s Cottage Club, 1280 Chagrin River Road in Gates Mills. The event is free and open to the public.
