If there’s someone who understands the power of flowers, it’s Jeff Leatham. Reknowned for his signature use of bold colors and sculptural shapes, the celebrity floral designer regularly works with high-profile celebrities like Kim Kardashian – he recently teamed up with her on a new KKW Fragrance trio – and is the creative director of Four Seasons Hotel George V, Four Seasons Hotel Los Angeles At Beverly Hills, and Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center. If that wasn’t enough, he also just launched a luxury floral delivery venture called Bloom Bundle.
But despite his whirlwind work and travel schedule, one upcoming project has Leatham especially excited: designing a dazzling installation to greet guests entering the grounds for the 2021 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show.
Running from June 5 to 13, the country’s biggest floral show is poised to be one of this summer’s hottest tickets. For starters, it’s being held outside for the first time in its 193-year history at FDR Park. So instead of being cooped up indoors at the Pennsylvania Convention Center, attendees now have 15 acres to safely explore and engage. The new location is also easily accessible via public transportation, and because there’s a strong educational component – the event is organized into three districts (Design, Plant, and Garden)– it’s terrific for people of all ages.
Most importantly: this year’s Flower Show is showcasing its biggest roster ever, with over 75 designers representing up-and-coming local creatives to established heavyweights like Leatham. “This is a wonderful opportunity to experience local artists, talent, and businesses,” he says of the event’s importance and impact on Philadelphia’s economy. “Over the past 18 months, we’ve learned how crucial it is to support them.”

As for Leatham’s contribution, which will be the first installation guests see when they enter through the iconic Olmsted Pavilion? “We were able to plan something bigger than usual,” he explains of the unique outoor setting. And to celebrate the event’s theme of “HABITAT: Nature's Masterpiece,” Leatham imagined what would happen if “nature looked a bit overgrown and wild in the pavilion, but in a beautiful, bright way that still respected the architecture itself.”
To bring his artistic vision life, Leatham is using an unexpected mix of plumosa ferns and baby’s breath that wrap around the pavilion’s Romanesque columns in orange and hot pink (”happy, bright colors”) to give the impression of “giant roots growing from the ground and into the pavilion.” Also: in true Leatham style, expect “a few orchids here and there.” Understanding the positive emotional power of flowers on people, Leatham simply wants guests to feel joy and relief after such challenging times: “I really want people to be wowed, because they deserve that now.”
