In a plain, strip-mall shopping center — the kind that's common to Aurora and east Centennial — sits a bright spot: a flower shop that has churned out deliveries amid the pandemic. And business seems to be booming.
“I think this is the busiest Mother's Day I ever worked here,” said owner Susana Lukon, 39, a few days after the holiday.
Forever Flowers, a business that sits near Smoky Hill and Buckley roads in Centennial, is easy to miss for drivers passing through. But the shop serves customers that are local, from out of state and even some from out of the country — including from Canada and Australia.
“They have family here from what I understand,” said Lukon, adding that such customers find the shop through Facebook or Google.
Forever Flowers closed for a month last year in March and April, not taking any orders at all, but Lukon was confident the business would make it through as the pandemic took hold. When the shop reopened, it modified its business model, focusing on preordered, prepaid pickups and deliveries. It now takes walk-ins again, Lukon said.
The shop has been in business for about 30 years. It's gone through a string of owners but stayed a flower shop, according to Brian White, the outgoing owner. Lukon and her daughter recently took over as the owners. They had been working there since 2015 as florists, making arraignments, Lukon said.
The Aurora resident started around 2009 in the flower business and used to work in Kansas.
“I used to come (to Colorado) twice a year for vacation, and I fell in love with Colorado and knew someday I would move here, and I made a decision and sold everything I had in Kansas,” said Lukon, who got her job transferred to allow her to relocate. She moved here in 2015 and enjoys working with her daughter.
“It's pretty awesome to have her here with me doing what I love, and she loves it as well,” Lukon said.
Lukon describes flower arrangement as an art that brings “a lot of creativity,” she said.
The job is “bringing people's comfort and even making people's special flowers for weddings and proms,” Lukon said.
“Brighten their days with flower arrangements, that's what I like the best,” she added. “Making people happy.”
