The Grosse Pointe Woods Beautification Advisory Commission’s 46th annual flower sale will be held May 7-8 on the front lawn of the Robert E. Novitke Municipal Center.

GROSSE POINTE WOODS — Next week, local residents will plant themselves on the front lawn of the Robert E. Novitke Municipal Center for the Grosse Pointe Woods Beautification Advisory Commission’s 46th annual flower sale.

The flower sale is a city tradition. This year’s event will be held from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 7 and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. May 8, and all are welcome. The Robert E. Novitke Municipal Center is located at 20025 Mack Ave.

Those who preordered their items by the April 21 deadline can pick them up curbside from 3 to 6 p.m. May 6 at the municipal center. The flower sale serves as the BAC’s largest fundraiser, and event proceeds support beautification programs and plantings throughout Grosse Pointe Woods.

Otherworld GP, a nursery and landscape supply business located at 17750 Mack Ave. in Grosse Pointe City, is providing the plants and flowers for the sale. Those anxious to get their gardens ready or who just want to spruce up their landscapes can shop for annuals, perennials, hanging baskets, patio pots and more.

At the April 12 City Council meeting, the council granted the BAC permission to hold the sale while stressing that COVID-19 social distancing precautions and mask wearing will be enforced. At the meeting, Council member Vicki Granger commented on the preordering forms the BAC used for the sale.

“They really worked awfully hard to come up with a very smooth, easy process for people to order flowers. They are to be really commended for all of their hard work,” Granger said. “The Beautification Commission really stepped up and worked hard to make sure that form worked. … Kudos to the BAC.”

BAC members will accept credit/debit cards, checks and cash for purchases. Rachelle Koester, Gloria Arslanian and Marlin Stewart are serving as this year’s flower sale co-chairs.

Debra McCarthy is the BAC chair and said commission members are ready for the sale. They will be available to answer questions and help patrons pick out their selections. Some of the BAC members are master gardeners and can provide tips as to which plants grow best in the shade and in the sun.

“The commission always looks forward to it,” McCarthy said. “It’s an event people still come out for.”

She has noticed some color trends over the years. Some years, red is the popular flower, while other times, people go for white or purple hues. McCarthy said money raised from the event is used to purchase flowers that are planted citywide. While city employees do the actual labor, it’s the BAC that purchases the plants.

Another main event for the BAC is the annual beautification award ceremony in which homeowners and businesses are honored for their properties. The event is held every fall, and there are tentative plans for a ceremony this year — possibly outside because of COVID-19.

McCarthy said the BAC is always looking for volunteers to join the group. If interested, visit www.gpwmi.us/commissions/beautification.html.
