SALEM — Some locals want to raise awareness about Alzheimer’s and dementia by filling the Centennial Park entrance island along Park Drive with colorful flower pinwheels.
“The more people who donate, the prettier this will look,” Myers Family Insurance office manager Adam Roller said.
Myers Family Insurance partnered with the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the Alzheimer’s Association and the Salem Parks Department to establish the Salem Promise Garden as a means to raise funds locally for the battle against Alzheimer’s and dementia.
Donors can purchase the flower pinwheels now for $10 each or five for $40, with the public display beginning Saturday and continuing through June 30
Donations can be made in person at the chamber office, 210 E. State St., Salem, or Myers Family Insurance, 7600 South Range Road, Salem, or online at act.alz.org/goto/MFI or act.alz.org/goto/SalemChamber.
All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer’s Association.
“This will uplift the community and raise awareness of the Alzheimer’s Association mission. Hopefully this will help better their cause,” Chamber Executive Director Lori Jewell said.
She explained that in February, Tyler Adams, manager of Walk to End Alzheimer’s, with the Alzheimer’s Association, invited her and Roller to participate in a roundtable event.
The Alzheimer’s Association belongs to the chamber and serves Columbiana County as well as the Mahoning Valley, but the group’s biggest fundraiser, the Mahoning Valley Walk to End Alzheimer’s, takes place in Mahoning County, this year on Oct. 16 at Youngstown State University.
The idea was to find a way to grow the mission in Columbiana County. The Salem Promise Garden is the result of those conversations as a way to get Columbiana County residents more involved.
Adams said in a press release that at the walk, there’s a Promise Garden ceremony which he described as “a hands-on mission-focused activity that allows participants to raise flowers representing their promise to remember, honor, care and fight for those living with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers.”
In partnership with Myers Family Insurance and the chamber, he said “we are bringing the Promise Garden to Salem to powerfully represent the impact of Alzheimer’s in this community and also honor those directly impacted by Alzheimer’s and dementia.”
For Roller and Myers Family Insurance managing partner Jim Myers, it’s a cause that hits close to the heart.
“Both of us have had family members who have suffered from Alzheimer’s. This is our way to honor them,” Myers said.
His grandmother had Alzheimer’s and he said “her mind quit way before her body did.”
Roller first met Adams when his grandfather was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s. His grandfather passed away two years later.
According to a fact sheet from the Alzheimer’s Association, more than 6 million Americans are living with Alzheimer’s and one in three seniors dies with Alzheimer’s or another dementia. Over 11 million Americans provide unpaid care for people with Alzheimer’s or other dementias and these caregivers provided an estimated 15.3 billion hours valued at $257 billion.
Jewell said the chamber is honored to be a part of the Salem Promise Garden, along with its partners at Myers Family Insurance and the Alzheimer’s Association and with the support of the Salem Parks Department for allowing the planting of the flowers on the island. She said the fundraiser can help the association continue to supply critical support and care services for those impacted by the disease.
