The Davis Flower Arrangers announces that member Yasmin Spiegel will present “The Delightful Challenge of Narrow Mouth Containers” at 7 p.m. Wednesday, May 5, via Zoom. She knows that everyone has a beautiful vase with such a small opening that they wonder what to do with it. She will demonstrate five different options for creative ways to use small-mouth vases.

Spiegel comes to ikebana flower arranging from a background in theater, costume and set design, and the hobbies of stained glass and ceramics. She has always been fascinated by the way light is reflected and appears translucent when working with various materials. Her flower name, “Kidou” — “Her own Special Way,” embodies her wide range of visual, tactile and artistic interests.
Spiegel began studying with sogetsu master Kika Shibata Sensei in 2003 and received her fourth teacher’s certificate in 2014. She is at home with both traditional sogetsu forms and also more modern sculptural arrangements. Pushing the envelope in the use of materials and composition is what draws her to sogetsu, as well as the quality of “stopping your mind” when an arrangement is particularly engaging.
She has been teaching sogetsu ikebana for Ikebana International, at Wakamatsu Farms, and demonstrating at the Sacramento Home and Garden Show, and in the greater Sacramento area and in San Jose.
She will teach a class on May 8 at Wakamatsu Farms titled “Sticks, Stones and Leaves” and another on Aug. 7 titled, “End of Summer: A Bountiful Harvest Basket of Fruits, Vegetables and Blooms.” Both classes are offered through American River Conservancy.
