Flower blooms early at Bernheim Forest, getting us excited for spring - WLKY Louisville

Spotted at Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest -- a flower in bloom!That's right, one singular, beautiful flower. Forest officials posted a photo of it to the Facebook page explaining that a Higan Cherry (Prunus subhirtella ‘Autumnalis’) has bloomed along one of its trails.The deep pink buds open to light pink blossoms that turn almost white before fading, Bernheim says. Flowers bloom in clusters of 2 to 5 before the leaves in March and April, and may bloom on warm days in autumn or winter. The plant is a consistent early bloomer, but is especially early this year, Bernheim says, getting all of our hopes up for an early spring, too -- especially on a cold and rainy day.If you want to spot this little ray of sunshine, take a walk through the Sun and Shade Trail.Bernheim is open daily from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and admission is a recommended donation of $10 per car.
