HALTOM CITY — Flower Mound can win volleyball matches in many ways, as The Dallas Morning News’ top-ranked team swept Northwest Eaton on Friday night in the Class 6A Region I final at the W.G. Thomas Coliseum.
The 25-15, 25-17, 25-21 win sent Flower Mound to a state semifinal against Region II champion Klein, which swept Wylie on Friday. Flower Mound is two wins from its second state title in three years, having won the 6A championship in 2018.
Flower Mound (22-1) traded points with Eaton early in the first set, which was tied at every number from 1 to 6, before using its stellar defense at the net to pull away. Flower Mound led nearly wire to wire in the second set except for a 2-2 tie. Eaton came out strong in the third for a 7-2 lead before Flower Mound rallied for a 10-9 lead that was never lost.
“We played very well tonight,” coach Jamie Siegel said. “We executed the game plan. We play together no matter what. Even when we were down 7-2, it wasn’t going to faze us.”
In the first set, Eaton’s hitters had trouble getting the ball past Flower Mound’s tall, physical front line of Missouri-bound Kaylee Cox, her sophomore sister Maddie Cox and junior Bella Ortiz. In the third, an attacking mode put Eaton away.
There was some similarity in runs of 4-0 and 6-0 in the first set, and a 7-0 streak in Set 3 that took Flower Mound from a 9-4 deficit to an 11-9 lead. Senior Angelique Cyr served through each of those runs.
Cyr, an Arizona State signee, led Flower Mound with 14 kills and 22 digs. Kaylee Cox had 12 kills, 15 digs and two service aces. Caroline Dykes and Elaina Amador had 13 digs, and Dykes had a team-high 11 assists.
Eaton senior libero Caleigh Enax, an Angelo State signee, kept her team in the match with knuckle-scraping digs and saves from beyond the back line.
Flower Mound will face a challenge from undefeated Klein.
“I have some film on them already,” Siegel said. “I haven’t looked at it. I don’t look past anybody.”

The moment Sherry Olivares became the Wylie head coach six years ago, she recognized the promising future of the seventh-grade volleyball team.
Now as seniors, this group ended their season by leading the Lady Pirates to their first regional final appearance.
Niki Perry had 21 digs and Colorado Christian signee Izzy Jones led the team with seven kills, but it wasn’t enough, as Klein swept the Lady Pirates in Hearne. Brown commit Victoria Vo contributed all around for Wylie with one ace, four kills, and 12 digs.
Ranked No. 1 in the final 6A state rankings from the Texas Girls Coaches Association, Klein (26-0) began the first set strong with a 9-2 lead. With Jones contributing offensively, Wylie battled, with Klein leading 14-9.
Klein wasn’t threatened in the final two sets, building leads of 22-13 in Set 2 and 9-4 in Set 3.
Olivares said that it has been an amazing journey this year after overcoming back-to-back first-round playoff losses the last two seasons.
“They had a mission and wanted to accomplish some goals, and I think we exceeded some of those goals,” Olivares said. “It is unfortunate that we did not play very well tonight, but Klein is a good team, and I’ll give them credit.”
Jones, Vo, Heath, and Providence signee Niah Tucker are four of the team’s nine seniors and will continue their volleyball careers at the college level.
“Overall, I am very proud of this senior class,” Olivares said. “I am so happy and excited that I was able to be their coach.”
