BEDFORD, Va (WFXR) — One Family wants to break the statistic of adults with autism are either unemployed or underemployed by giving their son a chance by planting roots in Bedford.
With a little bit of dirty, some seeds, what sits under these tarps is a labor of love.
“I like giving flowers arrangements to other people and businesses,” said Max Lagasse.
Max Lagasse is a 20-year old with autism.
“Max is a great kid. I certainly wouldn’t wish raising a kid with autism on anybody. It’s hard, but you know, and raising all kids is hard,” said Jennifer Kohn, Max’s Mother.
They packed up and planted roots in Bedford to start the Little Otter Flower Farm.
“The main goal is to have a vocation for Max so that he can have something to do every day that he can support himself financially. In addition to using the flowers as an opportunity for me to work with other young adults with autism,” said Kohn.
Even though they started the flower farm during the pandemic, the bright spot is watching Max bloom.
“I like doing my tasks, making money, and doing a lot with flowers, like making arrangements and bringing them to the farmer’s market,” said Lagasse.
“You want your kids to continue to grow and learn and develop. That’s why we did this. Other kids like Max they’re underestimated, and they’re not given opportunities to grow. So here on the farm, Max has an opportunity to grow right along with the flowers,” said Kohn.
