Screenwriter Eric Roth has confirmed some long-standing rumors regarding Martin Scorsese’s upcoming drama thriller “Killers of the Flower Moon,” and more specifically Leonardo DiCaprio’s role in the costly project.
Based on “The Lost City of Z” author David Grann’s non-fiction book, the 1920s true story focuses on a string of murders of members of the Osage nation in Oklahoma after oil was discovered beneath their land. The series of slayings was one of the fledgeling FBI’s first major homicide investigations.
Originally setup at Paramount and now at Apple with a budget over $200 million, the project marks a reunion of Scorsese with his two most famous muses – Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio. Shooting was to begin in March this year but the coronavirus pandemic pushed it back.
In May came reports that DiCaprio would’ve starred as the film’s hero, most likely Texas Ranger Tom White who investigated the series of murders, but he had decided that he wanted to portray the nephew of De Niro’s villain, a man torn between love and his uncle’s schemes.
Now, speaking with Script Notes podcast (via IndieWire), Roth effectively confirms the DiCaprio rumors:
“Leonardo [DiCaprio] wanted some things changed that we argued about. He won half of [the arguments]. I won half of them. So that’s happening. I spent four or five years on this book, Killers of the Flower Moon, which everybody should read. It’s a wonderful book. My screenplay I think was accurate to the book. It’s the story of Osage Indians, 1921, the poorest people in America who discover oil in this terrible land in Oklahoma where they’ve been driven to. Then every killer in America comes to kill 184 of them for their money, but this really heroic guy comes in [to help].”
The film has no release date as yet and is now currently targeting a March 2021 start which would likely suggest a very late 2021 or more likely 2022 release.
