Volleyball area rankings (10/21): Flower Mound remains No. 1 despite first loss; three new schools join top - The Dallas Morning News

Flower Mound, which entered the week as the No. 1 team in the AVCA/USA Today national rankings, suffered its first loss of the season with a five-set loss to Plano West on Friday.

But Flower Mound (10-1), the 2018 Class 6A state champion, remains No. 1 in the area rankings because of its overall body of work this season. Flower Mound owns wins over four teams in the top eight of the 6A area rankings — No. 2 Prosper, No. 5 Flower Mound Marcus, No. 7 McKinney Boyd and No. 8 Southlake Carroll.

Plano West moved up four spots to No. 4 this week after wins over Flower Mound and Highland Park. Flower Mound (6-1), Marcus (6-1) and Plano West (5-1) all have one loss in District 6-6A.

Lovejoy, ranked No. 3 in the nation, remained No. 1 in the Class 5A area rankings after winning four matches in five days. Lovejoy (9-0) has won all 27 sets it has played this season after not being able to play the first two weeks of the season because of COVID-19 issues.

Denton moved up one spot, to No. 5, in the 5A rankings after beating then-No. 5 Grapevine 25-22, 26-24, 25-20 on Tuesday in a battle for first place in District 6-5A.

Aubrey joined the 4A/3A rankings after a 17-25, 25-17, 25-20, 25-16 win over then-No. 4 Melissa on Tuesday.
