Trick or treaters won’t be the only ones to knock on Rugby doors this Halloween.
The Little Flower Catholic Church will hold its annual Amazing Race from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31.
Members of the youth organization will go from door to door, requesting non-perishable food instead of candy.
“This year, we’re collecting food for the Pierce County Food Pantry,” said CYO Treasurer Kiara Larson. Larson and fellow CYO officer Alec Wolf said the group decides each year to help a cause to help people struggling with issues such as hunger, homelessness and poverty.
“It’s part of our three ‘S’s, Wolf said. “Our first ‘S’ stands for ‘Spiritual;’ our second ‘S’ stands for ‘Service’, and our third stands for ‘Social’,” he explained.
The teens said the event will incorporate all three “S”s.
“We divide into teams, and each team takes a neighborhood in Rugby. We ask for food, or whatever we’re collecting that year – this year, it’s food,” Larson noted.
A statement by Lisa Volk, CYO coordinator at Little Flower, said, “This year, we are focusing on being ‘Made for More’ to our families and our community while enjoying Christian fellowship and growing in our faith.”
Volk said the race serves “the least of our brothers,” referencing passages in book of Matthew in Christian scriptures.
“Last year, we worked with our community and the Soles4Souls (international charity) to collect over 650 pairs of shoes during the Amazing Race. At Soles4Souls, shoes are turned into jobs and empower people to break the cycle of poverty,” she added, giving “a big thank you to everyone in Rugby who supported this cause. It was really appreciated by the Soles4Souls (charity) to help people in need in the US and around the world.”
Volk said the evening of fun and service would begin with a supper at 6 p.m. before the race.
Larson and Wolf said the teams meet at the church after the race “to see who won.”
The winners would be announced at a pumpkin carving party at the church.
“The pumpkins will be lit and on display around Little Flower on Halloween,” Volk said.
Larson and Wolf said they enjoyed staying involved in the CYO and participating in activities.
Residents interested in donating food to the Amazing Race may either have it available for the members to pick up at their homes, or drop it off at the church.
“Be sure to label it ‘Amazing Race,'” Larson said.
