Why Flower Mound quarterback Nick Evers could be in for strong debut season - The Dallas Morning News

Nick Evers' 75-yard touchdown strike to lift his Flower Mound Jaguars over the McKinney Boyd Broncos on Friday night was welcomed by his head coach, Brian Basil, but certainly wasn’t a surprise.

The junior, who has accepted a leadership role as the quarterback of a young team for his coach, provided his squad with a consistent air attack, logging 19 completions in 23 tries for 221 yards.

Evers' compelling season-opener in his varsity starting debut was what Basil expected out of him.

“He’s shown to have a lot of different throws,” Basil said. “He’s been very accurate and we’ve been happy to see that type of throw and catch in a time when we needed it.”

The young Jaguars' new quarterback filled a void left by former Flower Mound star quarterback Blake Short.

Short, now a freshman at Stephen F. Austin, was a driving force for the Jaguars as the school’s starter in each of the past two seasons. He logged 3,254 yards and 35 touchdowns in 2019 serving as the team’s leader.

“Blake was instrumental and a great example for the work ethic that you have to have to play that position,” Basil said.

It wasn’t just Short set up the quarterback that trailed him. Jackson Averitt was a three year starter before Short, continuing a pattern of influential quarterbacks before him.

Evers was next up. He was a listener, but now he’s a voice and his offseason tossing in skill training set him up for a strong junior season. His willingness to put in the required repetition is why moments like the quarterback’s 75-yard launch to sophomore Landon Weidner become more frequent.

“Anytime you can get out to throw and catch it’s important so you can work on your accuracy and timing,” Basil said. “Of course with all of the COVID guidelines we weren’t able to do Texas high school football seven-on-seven, which we like to do with our guys.”

The road ahead won’t be without bumps. The Jaguars' next test is a home matchup against the Garland Naaman Forest Rangers on Friday at 7 p.m.

The Rangers haven’t made their 2020 entrance yet, but the Jaguars have plenty to prepare for after only scoring 10 points last week despite Evers' efforts. Flower Mound lost a hefty 2019 senior class at each of the major offensive positions — that included the departure of Short and nine senior receivers.

Basil added that the Flower Mound’s run game wasn’t as strong as needed — the Jaguars had 59 yards on the ground with 39 rushes. Its improvement, and the effectiveness of the rushing attack, could be what dictates how strong a season Evers has.
