The land restoration work is part of a Cook County plan to restore 30,000 acres of prairie, woodlands, savanna and other natural space to good ecological health in 25 years. The plan also calls for expanding the forest preserves to 90,000 acres from their current 69,000. Throughout the county, crews are restoring natural prairie after settlers brought in invasive plants and later, the Forest Preserve District planted trees on the land.
