After Business Mart in Fort Morgan closed, in the midst of nationwide economic strain, The Flower Petaler saw a way to expand their business even further.
The store already sells furniture, candles, tuxedo rentals and more on top of their eponymous flower bouquets and will now sell a variety of candy originally sold at Business Mart.
“When COVID hit we just kind of decided we had to figure out something,” Diane Schulte, who bought The Flower Petaler with her mother 16 years ago and now runs the store with her daughter, said.
Their solution was candy, and specifically locally made artisan candy. The preference was for products made in America, and even more for those made in Colorado.
“We decided to find things that are made in Colorado and the U.S., but so far we’ve got more Colorado than we do other products,” Schulte said.
There are 26 flavors of fudge in the store, all handmade in a back room.
“We’ve got our customer favorites and that would be the salted nut roll, the snickers, the ooey gooey cluster,” Shulte said. “Right now we’re getting into our fall flavors, so we have three different pumpkin flavors, three different apple pie flavors.”
They also added taffy from Estes Park, truffles from a Texas company, Colorado Cherry Company products and nine different types of caramel apples. Candy is new for The Flower Petaler, which is part of a long line of flower stores in that location.
“You’re probably talking at least 32 to 34 years ago when a flower shop was put in here,” Schulte said. “We bought it 16 years ago, my mom and I. My mom has since retired so it is mine and my daughter’s but it’s just been something that we’ve loved and enjoyed doing.”
It doesn’t end at just flowers and candy; the store is stuffed with an assortment of products.
“We have everything — we rent tuxes, we are starting to carry menswear, we have everything from stuffed animals to plants, we have silks, home decor, we have furniture. So yeah, we have a wide variety and we’ve got the clothing store next door, too,” Schulte said.
The initial impact of COVID was challenging and inspired the expansion into candy, but Shulte said that the amount of community support that followed has been touching.
“It’s tough, but we’re very fortunate because we’ve had a lot of Morgan County-wide support and that’s why we like living in a small town,” Schulte said.
