Fixing up a bouquet using plants from your backyard can bolster your home’s fall decor.

Jennifer Haf, founder of Bloom Floral Design, teaches participants how to make their own floral arrangements in a hands-on workshop, offered in the Charlevoix shop or to private parties.

Bloom started in 2008 in response to Haf’s love for sharing cut garden flowers from her Northern Michigan backyard.

“We have been hosting workshops for the last 10 years,” Haf said. “We have done one-on-one professional design workshop and recently added a seasonal bouquet workshop series, May through October, highlighting locally grown garden flowers each month.”

Attendance for the monthly seasonal workshops at Bloom’s downtown Charlevoix studio is limited to 10 people.

“The atmosphere is casual and relaxed and open to all skill levels. Each guest creates their own flower arrangement to take home to enjoy,” Haf said.

People attending the October workshop, the final of the 2020 series, will create a late-season arrangement featuring grasses and textural bits from the garden.

If those interested in floral arranging can’t attend the workshop, Haf encourages them to look around their environment for inspiration.

“Cut what is in season in your yard. Even a simple bud vase of garden flowers can bring so much joy. Of course, visit your local flower shop to see what is blooming in season,” Haf said.
