Members of the Franklin County Garden Club recently enjoyed participating in the National Garden Club Inc.’s virtual flower show.

Club President Lola Eslick explained that the national, state and local clubs hold periodic flower shows where they display and present various floral designs and horticulture for judging.

“These events have always been open to the public and are a wonderful display of floral beauty,” Eslick said. “During this pandemic, rather than just walking away entirely from the regular flower shows, the National Garden Club Inc. decided to attempt a virtual flower show.”

Across the organizations, many flower shows have been canceled or postponed due to the pandemic with members confined to their homes.

“The retooling of standard procedures for flower shows to accommodate our issues with the COVID-19 pandemic allowed members the opportunity to participate in this show,” Eslick said.

This virtual show followed the same format and modified rules as an onsite show but with photographs used for judging and selecting winners.

Eslick won a first-place award in the horticulture division for her perennial specimen grown for foliage, arisaema dracontium.

“This is a plant that grows in a container pot in my shade garden,” Eslick said. “It is a native plant that is somewhat unusual.”

Arisaema dracontium, commonly called green dragon, is very similar to Jack-in-the-pulpit, except green dragon usually has only one large, long-petioled, compound leaf that is divided into 7-15 lance-shaped leaflets and has a greenish spadix, which is narrower and tapers up and beyond the less prominent, greenish hood of the spathe.

It is an interesting native spring wildflower for the shady woodland garden, wild garden or native plant garden.

The plant grows well in moist conditions along streams or ponds. It can be planted with hostas, which will continue to fill the space in summer when these plants go dormant.
