The now-dead suspect in the slaying of a Flower Mound 18-year-old may have driven from California to Texas to settle a dispute that began in a video game.
Officers were called shortly before 6 a.m. Tuesday to a home in the 3600 block of Green Meadow Lane, where they found Matthew Thane shot to death.
According to a police spokesman, the attacker lured Thane outside by setting a propane tank at the back of the home on fire.
Police said the gunman had been wearing a helmet and that they had no reason to believe he was still in the area.
Detectives soon focused their investigation on a 23-year-old California man whom Thane knew through online gaming, police said. Thane, who used the handle mJapan, streamed himself playing games including Call of Duty on Twitch.
Cellphone data showed that the suspect had driven from Pleasanton, Calif., to Flower Mound and back — nearly 1,700 miles each way — in a 72-hour period, police said.
Authorities obtained a search warrant for the man’s home, and he apparently killed himself Wednesday night as officers approached the residence. The man’s name and official cause of death have not been released.
Flower Mound police said that evidence recovered from the Pleasanton home was linked to Thane’s death and that they would release more information about the case after confirming that the California man was the killer.
Capt. Shane Jennings, a police spokesman, said the idea that the shooting was caused by a video-game feud was still just “a theory” at this point and that detectives won’t know more until they obtain data from Thane’s and the suspect’s gaming devices.
A GoFundMe account set up to benefit Thane’s family has raised more than $17,000.
“Matthew never failed to put a smile on someone’s face and brighten their day,” the fundraising page says. “He was such a unique character, one of a kind.”
