Flower Mound Town Council seat winners Ann Martin and Sandeep Sharma.
Ann Martin is looking forward to joining the Flower Mound Town Council after soundly defeating Incumbent Claudio Forest.
Martin received 75% of the vote for Place 5, 27,383 to 9,163, after her campaign focused on preserving Flower Mound’s Master Plan and trees.
“My vision for Flower Mound was more about not making Master Plan amendments and not approving tree removals, so that we can preserve and protect the gem that Flower Mound is,” Martin said. “Those were the two things that really differentiated us.”
Martin said one of the first things she is looking forward to doing when she joins the council is participating in the search for a new town manager. Jimmy Stathatos left the job last month for the same position in Bedford.
“It’s a very exciting time for our town, and it’s an opportunity to look at many applicants,” Martin said. “I want to make sure that we’re on same page, to see that Flower Mound flourishes.”
In Place 2 on the Flower Mound Town Council, Incumbent Sandeep Sharma held off challenger David Johnson for a much more narrow victory of 19,973 to 18,005 (53% to 47%). Martin and Sharma both said during the campaign that they oppose new apartments coming to Flower Mound, a stance that resonated with residents.
“It’s important for me to remember that residents don’t want high-density projects,” Martin said. “We have a number of apartments already that have vacancies, another project going up near Home Depot and more apartments that were approved that haven’t even broken ground yet. I think we have enough apartments.”
Sharma said that he sees a lot of similarities between his and Martin’s visions for the town. He said that with this second term, his priorities will be proactively seeking new parks and open space — particularly in the west side of town — and making improvements to major intersections to help the traffic flow.
“I think we’ll get a lot done,” Sharma said. “The next couple years are years to look forward to in Flower Mound.”
HADLEY — Trailers used to store and process flowers grown at a Route 47 farm will be allowed to stay for another year, despite being in violation of town zoning bylaws.
The Planning Board on Tuesday voted 5-0 to allow Rebecca Maillet, owner of Many Graces Farm at 15 Lawrence Plain Road, to continue to keep storage containers, including refrigerated space, on the 5.5-acre site through Nov. 3, 2021.
Board Chairman James Maksimoski said floriculture is an allowed agricultural use, but the trailers should only remain due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Long term they have got to go,” Maksimoski said.
Maillet told the board that the trailers have been an integral part of the business, which sets up at weekly farmers markets, distributes to Whole Foods Market and provides flowers for weddings. The farm uses little equipment and is mostly a hand-operated business, Maillet said, noting that 36,520 flowers were planted in 2020, all by hand.
In addition, a flower processing shed constructed and attached to one of the trailers, to accommodate social distancing for workers during the pandemic, will need to get various permits through the building commissioner’s office.
Meantime, the board also decided that it will not review a proposed 36-foot tall bell tower planned for a traffic circle in the middle of the driveway at the front of Most Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 120 Russell St.
Ray Casella, of Casella Design Associates of Agawam, who is working on behalf of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Springfield, said the three-legged open structure with a cross at the top is reminiscent of ones in Poland. The inspiration for the tower comes from the church’s priest, the Rev. Piotr Pawlus, and is being designed by The Verdin Co. of Cincinnati, Casella said.

Mississippi on Tuesday voted to replace its state flag, which had been the last one in the U.S. to include an image of the Confederate-themed battle flag.
The new state flag will feature the magnolia flower and the phrase “In God We Trust." The flag was selected by a state commission in September to be put on the November ballot.
"This will be the new state flag of Mississippi. Voters overwhelmingly approved it. This is a great day for the state as we move forward from a divisive emblem that now rests in the past," tweeted resident Sam Hall.
The magnolia is in the center of the flag with 20 stars encircling it (representing Mississippi as the 20th state) with a dark blue background and red bars on each side.
“What I wanted to do was show every Mississippian that there’s a compromise out there, and we are the magnolia state,” Rocky Vaughan, the graphic designer who created the flag’s overall design, said. “If it’s appealing to the eyes, it will be accepted.”

First adopted in 1894, the previous flag featured blue and white stripes and a Confederate emblem in the corner. The banner was retired months ago as part of the national protests against racial injustice.
A majority of voters chose to keep the flag in a 2001 election, but several cities and counties and all of Mississippi’s public universities had stopped flying it because of the Confederate symbol.
“That old flag to me represented a lot of rebelism, you know, the good old boys,” said Taderell Lamont Roberts, 48, of Picayune. “It never bothered me. ... But is time for a different flag so our new generation can see that all that is in the past, and they don’t have to deal with that. We were brought up to just live with it. But I’m glad that now it’s time for a change.”
The magnolia was chosen by a state commission out of nearly 3,000 entries for the new flag’s design, including the “Great River Flag,” which featured a shield, reports said.

A motorist allegedly rammed a Chicago police officer into a flower bed while trying to drive away from a traffic stop in the Gold Coast neighborhood.
The pinned-in officer then pulled out a gun and ordered Anthony Sheko out of his Dodge Charger, in which police found a modified, fully automatic pistol, Cook County prosecutors said Wednesday.
Sheko, 23, was pulled over Tuesday near Maple and State streets after a squad car’s license plate reader flagged the car he was driving, Assistant State’s Attorney Jocelyn Schieve said. The officers walked up to the driver and passenger side doors.
The officer freed himself as Sheko allegedly reversed past him.
After the officer pointed his gun and Sheko exited the car, police searched under the driver’s seat and found a fully-automatic Glock 22 with an extended magazine with 23 rounds, Schieve said. The gun allegedly had a selector switch making it automatic.
The struck officer was hospitalized with swelling and bruising to his legs, Schieve said.
Sheko was arrested with his passenger, Asia Spann, 29, who was charged with possession of a controlled substance.
Sheko’s attorney said that the Charger wasn’t his and that his actions may not have been intentional.
Judge David Navarro ordered Sheko held on a $100,000 bail on charges of unauthorized use of a weapon and aggravated battery to an officer.
“This speaks to how volatile any traffic stop can be — both for the driver and officer — where what might be perceived as a routine stop suddenly turns very violent and dangerous,” Navarro said.
Navarro noted that Sheko is accused of being armed with two weapons in the incident — a “machine gun” and a “two-ton vehicle.”
Sheko, of Country Club Hills, is expected in court again Nov. 13.
